“Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” “Oye, Oye, Oye”

“Aussie, Aussie, Aussie,” “Oye, Oye, Oye”

In Australia a few years back I asked our tour guide an Aussie about the origin of the above phrase. When she answered you could tell a wave of patriotism swelled up in her voice, as she spoke about the 2000 Olympics in Sidney, Australia, how many of her countrymen left for other parts of the country and else where, stirred to leave by negative comment and unfounded rumors of what the Olympics might bring to Sydney.

For those who stayed and participated in the Olympic process it produced the most memorable moment in their lives. She admitted she did not know how or who started the chant but recalls how during the Olympics her countrymen swelled with patriotism and pride as they blared out the chant over and over again.

To this day if you yell out, the first three words of the phrase “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie”, you will likely be met with a chorus of Oye, Oye, Oye
